Coming out is almost unique to LGBTQ+ people; a process of self-disclosure to ourselves and those around us. LGBTQ+ identities are frequently subjected to lack of visibility and coming out can be a liberating decision, allowing you to be your “true self” around others.
Coming out is never a single event - LGBTQ+ people are in a constant state of coming out to new people. While this can be exhausting, it can also be a blessing. You need not come out to everyone at once, and it is often better to come out to certain people first and build confidence. The process is inherently personal. There is no right, wrong, best, or worst way to come out. If you ever need help, advice, support, or affirmation, the resources listed on the Welfare Resource page will be available to provide you with support.
There is no pressure to come out – it’s a personal choice, not an obligation! Many choose to come out at university, and we hope that you won’t face any hostility should you choose to do so here at Oxford.
Take the steps which make you comfortable and happy. Often a good place to start is by coming out to your closest friends first. You’ll likely be surprised by the support and encouragement you receive from those around you.
