Being Religious in Soc

The Faith Reps

Our LGBTQ+ society has two Faiths reps; it’s our role to run things for people of all different religions, and to represent your needs on LGBTQ+Soc committee. As your Faith reps we run fortnightly Faiths Teas, which are chill, welfare spaces with lots of snacks and chats. We run other ~*exciting events*~ as well: keep your eyes peeled for details of speaker events, panels, and other things that may be going on! (Sign up to the society mailing list to keep in touch). We also aim to provide resources and support for people of faith and are always around for a chat so please do get in touch about anything, big or small. You can email us as
oufaith01@gmail.com or oufaith02@gmail.com.

We run an (LGBTQ+ People of) Faith-book group to share events and resources and discuss things. The group is secret, so no-one on Facebook will be able to see you're a member, except the other people in the group. It also means we have to add people individually, so please get in touch if you would like to be added!

We’re here for everyone: we are using ‘people of faith’ as an umbrella term but please feel very welcome even if you wouldn't describe yourself as ‘of faith’. For example, our events are definitely open to members of ethnoreligious minority groups, people who grew up around religion, and people who are negotiating their relationships with it, as well as anyone who is interested!

We know that being LGBTQ+ and religious can be difficult and is at times made out to seem impossible. You are, however, not alone, and it is completely valid and possible to be both of faith and LGBTQ+, if that's what you want. As Faith reps we want to be here to support you in any way we can, so please do get in touch or come along to an event- we'd be glad to have you!

Being Religous at Soc Events

Discrimination and hate speech on the grounds of religion (e.g. islamophobia, antisemitism) are covered under LGBTQ+Soc’s Zero Tolerance Policy, and are something we take very seriously as a committee. If you see or experience anything of that kind, please do not hesitate to get in touch with any committee member, either in the moment, so that they can take action immediately, or afterwards.
As a society, we strive to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for our diverse membership by taking into account religious commitments when scheduling events. Because we run so many events, we can’t prevent all clashes, but we try to prevent people from missing out on large events or repeatedly on regular events due to religious commitments. Please feel free to get in touch with either the specific event organisers or Faith Reps if you have any concerns related to this.
LGBTQ+Soc events with food typically have vegetarian and gluten-free options available. If you have additional dietary restrictions, please feel free to contact the specific event organiser to ask about them.
Please feel free to contact your Faith Reps if you have any additional concerns about being a person of faith at LGBTQ+Soc events. LGBTQ+Soc should be a place where you feel comfortable bringing your full and authentic self, and it is important that no-one feel uncomfortable here due to their religion.
